At Buxton Lodge, we understand the profound impact our environment has on our wellbeing, especially for those living with dementia. That’s why we are delighted to introduce our newly created reminiscence area—a space lovingly crafted to evoke memories and provide comfort to our residents and their families.
The power of familiar surroundings cannot be overstated. For individuals with dementia, recognisable settings can offer a sense of security, reduce anxiety, and help orient to time and place. It is in these settings that residents can connect with their past, triggering pleasant memories and emotions that are vital to their identity and happiness.
The reminiscence area at Buxton Lodge is designed to feel like a cosy corner of a home from yesteryears, complete with comfortable armchairs, a selection of books, and charming décor that might remind residents of their own living rooms. The centrepiece of this area is a traditional record player, which is not only a nod to the past but also a therapeutic tool. Music has a unique role in dementia care. The melodies and rhythms of familiar songs can unlock joy and memory, taking residents on a journey back to significant moments in their lives because of the strong emotions attached to these tunes.
Through music, we can tap into memories that may otherwise be inaccessible, offering our residents not just entertainment, but a bridge to their past. The songs played on our record player have the power to lift spirits, prompt stories, and even encourage movement and dance, contributing to both emotional and physical wellbeing.
We welcome our residents and their loved ones to spend time in this special area, to reminisce, to bond, and to enjoy the soundtrack of their lives. It’s not just about the music or the furnishings; it’s about creating moments of joy and connection, and at Buxton Lodge, we’re committed to making those moments happen every day.
