A resident at Aurem’s Kilburn care home who spent much of his childhood growing up in care says he feels he has “gained a part of my life back” after rebuilding family relationships and rediscovering his confidence later in life.
Seventy-one-year-old Peter, who lives at Kilburn Care Home in Belper, has undergone a remarkable transformation since arriving at the home during one of the most difficult periods of his life.
Born in Eastwood, Peter spent much of his early years living in children’s homes across Chesterfield and Sheffield. Despite the challenges he faced growing up, he developed a strong work ethic and determination that would help shape a successful career in catering.
After achieving a Level 3 qualification in Catering, Peter began his career working in a bakery in Hucknall, before moving on to a number of other bakeries and eventually into hospitality. His skills and dedication led him to a role as a chef at Butlin’s in Skegness, where he thrived in the fast-paced environment and took great pride in preparing meals for guests.
When Peter arrived at Kilburn Care Home, part of Aurem Care, he was struggling both physically and emotionally.
Initially, having lost a significant amount of weight and much of his confidence, he rarely left his room and felt very isolated. Staff recognised that alongside support for his health, Peter needed opportunities to rebuild his sense of purpose, independence, and connection with others.
Today, his life looks very different.
One of the most significant milestones has been reconnecting with his family. Peter, who has a mother, brother and two children, has rebuilt relationships with loved ones after many years apart, bringing renewed happiness and a stronger sense of belonging.
He has also become a valued and active member of the Kilburn Care Home community, regularly helping with practical projects around the home. Peter has repaired dining room furniture, painted garden furniture, redecorated his own room and even led baking sessions and arts and crafts activities for fellow residents.
Known for his willingness to help others, he now plays an important role in encouraging residents to get involved in activities and making a positive contribution to life at the home.
Another visible sign of Peter’s renewed confidence came recently when he treated himself to a smart new suit, something staff say reflects the pride he now takes in himself and his future.
Speaking about his life at Kilburn Care Home, Peter said: “I am very happy at Kilburn. I like everything about it and feel like I’ve gained a part of my life back. The staff are wonderful, I’ve made good friends, and I enjoy getting involved and helping wherever I can.”
Kat Townsend, home manager at Kilburn Care Home, said: “Peter’s journey has been truly inspiring to witness. When he first came to us, he was very unwell and lacked confidence, but through his own determination and the support of our team, he has completely transformed.
“Seeing him reconnect with his family, regain his independence and become such an important part of our community has been wonderful. He is always willing to lend a hand, support other residents and share his skills. Peter reminds us all that it is never too late for a fresh start and a new chapter in life.”
