A weekly singing session at a Chesterfield care home is proving a big hit with residents, bringing people together for music, friendship and plenty of conversation.
More than 20 residents and friends at Brimington Care Home, part of Aurem Care, regularly take part in the Wednesday morning singalong, which has become a firm fixture in the home’s calendar.
The hour-and-a-half sessions are hosted by volunteers Margaret and Sandra and feature residents’ favourite songs and well-known tunes from years gone by.
As well as joining in with the music, residents enjoy coffee and the opportunity to catch up and socialise, with the sessions creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere.
Among those taking part is 93-year-old resident June, who said: “I love singing. I could sing all day. We love Margaret’s company and we love to socialise.”
Senior carer Emily said the sessions have become something residents eagerly anticipate each week. She said: “Residents look forward to this each week and come out in high spirits. It is lovely to witness.”
Heather McGrath, home manager at Brimington Care Home, said: “Our Wednesday singing mornings have become a real highlight of the week. Music has a wonderful way of bringing people together and you can see how much residents enjoy choosing familiar songs, singing along and simply spending time in each other’s company.
“We are very grateful to Margaret and Sandra for giving their time each week. They have built a lovely rapport with our residents and there is always a great atmosphere when they visit.”
